Digital scientific social networks, also known as digital academic social networks or academic social networks, are online platforms designed to facilitate communication and collaboration between researchers. These social networks are generally managed by private companies, although some have been created at the initiative of researchers.

Online registration, which is usually free, is required to access these networks. Once registered, the user becomes a member of the network and can log in, create their profile or resume by entering information through an online form, and access a wide variety of content and services, most of which are free.

Scientific social networks offer a variety of online services, including the ability to connect with other members, ask questions of the community, answer questions, search for experts in a field, discuss topics, flag or deposit publications, and request that a network author share their publication privately.

Additionally, these networks allow members to measure their activity and impact within the network, for example by tracking the number of visitors, profile views, document views, etc. Some networks also offer premium services, such as posting job offers or connecting with professional companies.
